Halloween is such a fun time of year. Parties, costumes, tasty snacks… and for most people there’s no significant underlying meaning to the whole thing. Just fun.
Dollar General has a ton of stuff for every Halloween party. Costumes, lighting, door signs and wall decor, fake spiderwebs, CDs of spooky music and sounds, party bags and favors, and of course candy.
You know I wasn’t going to bring home a ton of candy for a party though, right? But I did find some super-cute lanterns and tabletop lights. The tabletop lights were AWESOME… all sparkly/glittery, and the light inside changes colors slowly.
I also picked up some cupcake papers and little ghostie picks and made some banana muffins for the kids in them.
And each of my kids got a little costume starter too. Joseph’s crocodile hat is so adorable… I’m not a huge fan of masks because they make you breathe in all their nasty fumes, get damp from the condensation of your breath, and limit your visibility… so this hat was perfect. All I would need to do to complete the costume is dress him in green from head to toe, and make him a simple crocodile tail.
Anneliese chose some ladybug wings, which also came with a headband with antennae. I was impressed witht the quality of the wings, and the elastic fit her arms perfectly (no droopy wings or having to tie knots in the elastic to make them fit better). The antennae kind of fell apart after a few minutes of playing, but they would be easy to re-make in a more sturdy way. (The headband was fine, but the pom poms just fell off.) Adding a black or red dress, or red with black spots (or black shirt and leggings, or whatever) would complete the costume.
I also got some adorable little halloween baskets for the kids, but I forgot to photograph them. Just trust me… they’re super cute, and they would be a great container for party favors or teacher/student gifts. They would also be perfect for “You’ve been BOO-ed” mini baskets.
And… if you follow my blog, you’ll notice that these pictures are from our house in California. Yup, bloggers’ kids get to experience holidays early sometimes. I might have to hit up another Dollar General here in Texas though, since we’ll be here for the real Halloween.
What’s your favorite item I picked up from Dollar General for this month? My favorite, hands down, is the table lanterns. I LOVE them.

I love the cute lanterns hanging from your curtains! I need to see if we have a Dollar General near us.
Perfect timing! My homeschool coop had a field trip planned to a pumpkin patch tomorrow but we are being rained out. Sooooo, I offered to host a halloween party at my house….in less than 24 hours. I’m running to the dollar store right after art class drop off!
